Antoine Griezmann Retires from International Football After 10-Year Career
French football star Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable 10-year journey with the national team. The Atletico Madrid forward, aged 33, made 137 appearances for France, netting 44 goals and playing a pivotal role in the country’s 2018 World Cup triumph, where he scored a penalty in the final to help France defeat Croatia 4-2.
Griezmann also contributed to France’s 2021 Nations League victory and was the top scorer in Euro 2016, guiding his team to the final. Announcing his decision on social media, Griezmann expressed gratitude for the “magnificent tricolour adventure” and reflected on his incredible memories representing France.
He last appeared for the national team in a Nations League match in September, ahead of the next international break when France will face Israel and Belgium. Didier Deschamps, who managed Griezmann throughout his international career, praised him as a “monument of French football” and one of the nation’s greatest players.
Griezmann’s announcement comes after a highly successful international career that included an emotional 2022 World Cup final against Argentina and a semi-final exit at Euro 2024. His legacy in French football is cemented, and teammates like Kylian Mbappe have hailed him as one of the most significant players of modern French football.
