The road to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is heating up as 15 teams have already secured their spots, leaving nine places still up for grabs. The tournament, set to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026, promises intense competition as the final qualifiers unfold.
Among the already qualified nations are defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and runners-up Nigeria. Both secured their places alongside Tunisia, South Africa, and Uganda in dramatic fashion on Thursday. Tunisia’s Ali El Abdi clinched their record 18th consecutive AFCON appearance with a last-minute header in a 3-2 win over Madagascar.
South Africa and Uganda benefited from other results in Group K after Congo’s 3-2 loss to South Sudan, confirming their qualifications without playing. Gabon also secured their spot after the Central African Republic fell to Lesotho in Group B.
Nigeria’s top-two finish in Group D was secured earlier by Libya’s 1-0 win over Rwanda. The Super Eagles later drew 1-1 against Benin, with Victor Osimhen salvaging a point through a late equalizer.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s hopes remain alive following Sudan’s 4-0 defeat to Niger. However, Ghana must win their last two matches and hope Sudan falters against Angola to secure a place in Group F.
Teams like Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are poised to fight for their spots, with Friday’s qualifiers featuring 10 critical matches across the continent.
