Charlie Dior Reflects on Fashion, Upbringing, and Future Aspirations
Charlie Dior, known for his sharp fashion critiques and bold style, recently opened up about his upbringing and future aspirations during an interview on The Delay Show. Born Charles Tamakloe, Dior shared insights into his father’s influence, explaining how his father would frequently correct his posture and behavior in an effort to prepare him for life’s challenges. “My dad used to say, ‘Don’t stand like this, stand like that,’” Dior recalled. He made it clear that these corrections weren’t out of a lack of love but rather out of concern for his future. “He wasn’t trying to hold me back; he was trying to help me navigate a world that can be tough for someone like me.”
Dior also spoke about the pressures of conforming to traditional masculine ideals. “He wanted me to fit into the mold of how society expects a man to present himself,” Dior explained. However, it wasn’t until he moved to the United States that he fully embraced his true self and felt free to express his individuality.
During the interview, Dior also addressed his critiques of celebrity fashion, particularly his breakdown of the all-black party in Kumasi in August 2024. Dior’s outfit for the event was a statement, designed to elevate a simple black look to the next level. He humorously noted that while his first look got a “borrow” rating, some celebrities didn’t understand the assignment and earned a “burn” from him. On Saturday, his daring lace outfit was intended to create a sexy vibe, but it received mixed reactions online. Dior expressed disappointment with the vulgar comments directed at him, urging people to engage in more constructive conversations instead. “Instead of throwing insults, let’s have a productive dialogue,” he said, addressing the backlash. He also mentioned that his bold fashion sense tends to make some Ghanaians uncomfortable, humorously suggesting that they might need to see a therapist.
On a personal note, Dior shared his thoughts on marriage and family. While he admired his parents’ long-lasting marriage and their loving bond, he admitted he’s uncertain about marriage for himself. “I’m not sure about marriage yet, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there,” he said. However, one thing he is certain about is having kids someday.
Charlie Dior also spoke briefly about his family background. His grandfather, Tamakloe, was a practicing Muslim who had a mosque in Odorkor, and Dior’s upbringing was influenced by the discipline he received from his aunt. Dior, who holds a degree in Broadcast and Mass Communication and an associate degree in Radio Production, currently works for a communications firm, continuing to build his career while shaping fashion conversations across the industry.
