Lekzy Decomic Highlights the Importance of Traditional Media for Event Promotion and Local Support in Ghana
In a recent interview on 3Music, Ghanaian comedian Emmanuel Nkansah Ansong, known by his stage name Lekzy Decomic, shared his perspective on the effectiveness of traditional media versus new media when promoting events. Drawing from his personal experience, he emphasized that relying solely on digital platforms for publicity may not yield the desired results, especially when targeting certain regions. Instead, using radio and local media partnerships can drive better audience engagement and event turnout.
Lekzy also spoke about the persistent issue of Ghanaians supporting their own talent. He praised Charterhouse for consistently promoting local acts but pointed out a troubling pattern: Ghanaians working abroad, particularly in Nigeria, often fail to promote Ghanaian talent, opting instead to recommend them back home. He warned that this mindset hampers industry growth, urging more unity and mutual promotion within the entertainment sector.
Parrot Mouth, another popular comedian, joined the discussion, pointing out that event organizers sometimes set restrictive rules that hinder performers from mentioning certain personalities. This contrasts with the more flexible Nigerian approach, where performers can be tipped to give shoutouts during their acts, adding vibrancy to shows. The two comedians agreed that the issue often lies with entourages or “small boys” around celebrities, rather than the stars themselves, who are typically more relaxed about being the subject of jokes.
Lekzy concluded with a practical tip for fans: understand the nature of an event before attending. He advised that if a ticket is purchased for a highlife show featuring Amakye Dede, attendees shouldn’t expect dancehall music from Shatta Wale. By aligning expectations with the artist’s genre and style, fans can better enjoy the experience.
