Opanka Shares His Thoughts on Ghanaians Not Valuing Their Own
Ghanaian rapper Opanka has voiced his concerns about how Ghanaians fail to appreciate their own talents, compared to the respect and recognition celebrities receive in other countries.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo, Opanka recalled a surprising experience during his visit to a spa in America. Before his session, a lady recognized him and excitedly informed the spa owner that he was a big star in Ghana who gets paid to perform. Upon hearing this, the spa owner offered him a free massage, asking only to take pictures with him for social media.
For Opanka, this gesture symbolized the high regard foreign countries have for celebrities, something he feels is lacking in Ghana. He noted that while he enjoys the freedom of being low-key abroad, once people recognize him, they show even more respect, helping to boost his brand and career.
Shifting to relationships, Opanka revealed that from childhood, he had noticed that most women he dated were not money-driven. Many were even willing to support him financially, though he personally preferred to take responsibility as a man.
He emphasized that a man should be able to provide for his family, cautioning that over-reliance on others could make it difficult to fulfill his responsibilities.
In a lighthearted moment, Nana Romeo asked if Opanka was the type to buy flowers for women, suggesting that most Ghanaian men focus on giving food like fufu and banku instead. Opanka laughed and responded that just as foreigners don’t know how to eat fufu and banku, Ghanaians also have their own cultural norms.
He also pointed out that in some foreign countries, couples split the bill on dates, but in Ghana, women often expect the man to pay. He humorously noted that Ghanaian women wouldn’t accept “coffee dates” or “walk dates”, as they would question whether they had eaten before going on a walk. He believes people should appreciate the effort men put into relationships, rather than comparing local dating customs to those abroad.
