Togo Rejects GFA’s Request to Use Kégué Stadium for AFCON Qualifiers

Togo has reportedly turned down the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) request to play their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Sudan at the Kégué Stadium. According to media sources, Togo wants to preserve the stadium’s condition for their own home qualifier match against Algeria.

The GFA had been exploring the possibility of hosting the game at either Togo’s Kégué Stadium or a venue in Ivory Coast. However, after Togo’s refusal, Ivory Coast remains the only option for Ghana’s match against Sudan.

This move comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval of Ghana’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium, citing poor pitch conditions following Ghana’s defeat to Angola. The National Sports Authority (NSA) has since closed Baba Yara for renovations, along with Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium, which were also deemed unfit for international matches.

With all three national stadiums undergoing renovations, none meet CAF’s category 3 standards required for hosting international games. As a result, the GFA is now seeking a neutral venue outside Ghana, with Ivory Coast emerging as the only remaining option following Togo’s rejection.

Should renovations not be completed in time, Ghana will have to continue playing its home games at neutral venues for the remainder of the AFCON qualifiers.
