Asamoah Gyan Announces Retirement from Football and Clarifies Political Stance
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has officially announced his retirement from active football, marking the end of a celebrated career that began in 2002. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Gyan reflected on this difficult decision, saying, “It is time to hang the jersey and boots in glory.” He expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and the Ghanaian people for their support throughout his journey.
Beyond football, Gyan’s recent involvement in politics, particularly his role as the chairman of the Youth and Sports sub-committee for the manifesto team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, raised eyebrows. However, in a public statement released on September 11, 2024, Gyan clarified that he is distancing himself from political affiliations. He emphasized his commitment to youth development through sports and philanthropy, stating, “I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana… I am not affiliated with any political party.”
In the same statement, Gyan outlined his vision for the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, which will focus on providing opportunities for Ghanaian youth through sports academies, training centers, and mentorship programs. He also announced his plans to venture into coaching and football business while continuing his humanitarian efforts.
Gyan’s retirement announcement and decision to step back from politics have sparked mixed reactions, with “Asamoah Gyan” trending on X. Some fans applaud his shift towards philanthropy, while others are disappointed by his political withdrawal.
Gyan concluded his statement with well wishes for the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections, expressing hope for peace and unity in Ghana.
