Shatta Wale Speaks on Fake Lives in Showbiz
Ghanaian dancehall sensation Shatta Wale, known in real life as Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., recently shared his views on celebrity culture and authenticity during an interview on The Rants, Bants, and Confessions. Touching on the “fake lives” that many celebrities portray, he emphasized the value of being authentic in one’s brand. “Branding is about being yourself, not trying to be someone else,” he said.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Shatta shared that he started saving at the age of 14, opening his first bank account at Prudential Bank with 750 Cedis. Growing up privileged, he was exposed to foreign currencies like dollars and pounds but chose to save rather than spend frivolously, even convincing the bank manager he was 18.
He acknowledged his steady journey to success, stating, “I built it, packaged it, and have gotten to where I am.” His tattoo of Philippians 4:19 signifies his belief in hard work and faith.
When discussing artist branding, Shatta praised Nigerian artist Asake for dressing to match his personality and highlighted King Promise’s strong fashion sense. However, he observed that Black Sherif’s style sometimes feels mismatched, despite his team’s efforts to elevate his look. Shatta emphasized that understanding one’s body type and personality is key to resonating with fans authentically.
