Brother Sammy Sparks Debate on Christian Fashion and Modernity
Ghanaian gospel musician Brother Sammy has sparked a conversation with his views on Christian dress codes during his appearance on the United Showbiz program, hosted by Gifty Adorye. Using Evangelist Diana Asamoah as an example, he explained that she once avoided wearing fabrics like lace, believing it to be sinful. However, with her new embrace of fashion, some critics have accused her of backsliding. Brother Sammy, however, argued that her “glory” is now greater than before.
He questioned why Christians restrict themselves with rigid dress codes, citing the biblical story of soldiers gambling over Jesus’ garment to emphasize the significance of good clothing. Sammy even suggested that this story marked the origin of betting.
Additionally, he criticized the tradition of women wearing headscarves, claiming it can lead to unpleasant smells and affect marriages. Sammy urged Christians to embrace looking good and to reject societal pressures that drive people away from the church due to strict views on appearance.
He praised Diana Asamoah’s current fashion choices as “classic” and divinely inspired, calling on Christians to stop using religion as a means to judge others based on their looks.
